Background and Discovery

Ethanol dates back to prehistory because it was used in early distilling and alcohol making processes. The first person to make pure ethanol was Johann Tobias Lowitz, and the chemical formula was founded by Nicolas-Theodor de Saussure. Then Archibald Scott Couper found it's structural formula 50 years later. It was synthetically made first in 1826 by Henry Hennel. After that it was used as lamp oil and in moonshine.

Where is it found?

Ethanol is one of the byproducts found in corn. Also found after fermentation of fruits by yeast breaking the fruits down.

How is it obtained?

Ethanol is manufactured from ethanol power plants from corn. Produced by fermenting sugars with yeast. The process of fermentation can be expressed like C6H12O6-->2(CH3)CH2OH+2(CO2)

Common Reactions

Can form esters with water when reacted with carboxolic acid.

It can combust when mixed with Oxygen into CO2 and H2O.

Can dehydrate into diethyl ether.

Uses

-Fuel and Energy
New studies now find that ethanol (extracted from corn) can be used to fuel America.

-Hand sanitizer
Ethanol poisoning danger when sanitizer is consumed.
